I teach high school students and I often come to the realization that we cannot expect them to understand the meaning behind well-known movements. I told them I was a feminist and they all looked at me like I was a radical. Googly eyes peering into my feminist-man-demeaning soul. Please! I don't have time for that! I am too busy raising 3 boys and 1 girl, whose strengths shine in all kinds of different ways (4 strong-willed children - Good. God. Give ME strength too!).
This is what I told my students (minus the swearing):
A feminist is not looking to overpower men. She wants the same opportunities as them.
A feminist is not looking to make more money than men. She wants companies or corporations to present her with the same pay scale.
A feminist is not looking for more than what he has. She wants to be able to achieve just as much.
Same opportunites, same power, same pay, same consideration and fuck double standards.
Feminists also want their partners or husbands to take parental leave if that's what they want. These women want their partners or husbands to communicate, connect and share without the pre-conceived notions that "a real man" is better or stronger than...
Feminists want to raise boys who understand how to manage and express emotion. I want to raise men who see women as their allies, partners, friends and if they must compete, they are competing fairly against a person, an equal.
I am a feminist and I want to be a role model for my daughter. I want my sisters to thrive. I want my brother to sip tea with his niece while wearing a tutu or accept a doll from my son who wants to be a good "papa".
Feminists are breaking the mould of society's standards. Ladies and gentlemen, take the hammer, break down those walls and let's not raise little assholes.
Turns out, my students are feminists too.
